aBOUT THE PRODUCTION…
After many highly successful runs in Cape Town, Hermanus and the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, Jam Every Other Day is now coming to Hong Kong. Adapted from the memoir of South African author, Emmaleen Kriel, this one-woman show is true feel-good theatre with healthy doses of humour, charm and pathos.
The story follows the lives of Kriel and her brood of children, geese, ponies and dogs from their home in 1960s rural Constantia to their adventure in the forests of Knysna. Life certainly had its hardships for the family, but on the whole it genuinely was just as idyllic as it seemed – if a little unconventional.
This daring production is brought to life by actress, Erika Marais. She not only performs the piece, but was the driving force behind the adaptation. Having been a young mother herself, Marais found
that the challenges and the life portrayed in the memoir resonated deeply. Audiences and critics have raved about her performances, saying she “plays it from the heart with honesty and empathy”
(Coleen van Staden, April 2018).
The piece has been thoughtfully crafted by award-winning director Celia Musikanth, who adapted the memoir along with Marais. These three women, Marais, Musikanth and Kriel, have come together to bring to life “a message of hope worth being heard, seen and felt”.
